Following a detailed review of the sustainability software market, credit360 was selected as the solution to replace an Excel based approach to sustainability data gathering and analysis. The web-based credit360 system will provide ready access to employees all around the world to enter environmental and social data centrally. The system will automatically screen data for potential errors and manage the data collection process through an approval workflow, complete with a detailed audit trail. According to research from the Carbon Trust, as much as 80% of a company's total carbon impact lies outside its direct operational control (i.e. their Scope 3 emissions). Every tonne of carbon emitted creates costs of between £200 and £400, so managing Scope 3 emissions creates significant opportunities for cost reduction as well as environmental improvement. Of the 15 Scope 3 categories, Purchased Goods and Services (PG&S) often constitutes the largest source of emissions and presents interesting reduction opportunities.
However, managing carbon emissions from PG&S can be challenging as they are associated with complex sources which can be hard to understand and measure. This is because they are comprised of 'embodied carbon' from a disparate range of sources through the supply chain.
Despite their significance, and perhaps due to this complexity, carbon emissions from PG&S remain one of the least frequently reported Scope 3 emission sources.
